Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Accessible Learning & Inclusion, the Accessible Learning Officer (ALO) works in collaboration with Accessible Learning staff to coordinate and facilitate accommodations for students with disabilities. This includes coordinating third-party service providers for students who are Deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing and assisting students to access funding for disability-related needs. The ALO also supports seamless accommodation planning by administering SharePoint sites (multiple campuses), scheduling intakes, clarifying documentation requirements and intake process. Providing interim or temporary accommodations, as appropriate, the ALO also acts as an information resource for potential students, current students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding services offered by Accessible Learning.

What You’ll be Doing

Responding to inquiries (email, telephone) from applicants, students, parents, and service providers regarding how to access services and refer other inquires appropriately to other College contacts;

Disseminating information related to accommodating the needs of applicants and enrolled students to staff, faculty, school boards, parents, and external professionals;

Arranging interim and/or temporary accommodations within established parameters for students who identify as having interim or temporary accommodation needs (e.g. Varsity athlete with a broken wrist requiring additional time to write tests);

Coordinating computerized note taking and Interpreter services for students who are Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing. This includes tracking student requests, arranging complimentary parking, coordinating SLATE access with HR and IT, and communicating with George Brown College (Administrator of Interpreter Fund) and Sheridan internal departments;

Working with Accessible Learning Advisors and Learning Strategists/Assistive Technologists to support completion of Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) and AL Bursary applications;

Coordinating requests for ergonomic equipment, classroom relocation etc. which includes determining what classrooms require furniture and contacting Facilities Management;

Providing system navigation support for students with complex needs. This involves assisting students with accessing online intake processes, supporting testing accommodations with assessment centre etc.;

Leading scheduling of outreach activities (transition sessions, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) sessions) to prepare students for post-secondary education in advance of enrolment;

Assisting with facilitating sessions, preparing/updating presentations to reflect accurate and relevant information;

Performing other related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will also meet the following requirements:

3-year Diploma or Degree in Psychology, Social Services Worker, Education, or Disability Studies.

Minimum of 2 years practical experience in a student services environment or working directly with students with disabilities.

Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Experience independently problem solving to resole day-to-day issues and concerns.

Intermediate to advanced computer skills (MS Office).
