Department Overview

The TD Canadian Government Relations team directs advocacy activity across the three orders of government in Canada, across all lines of business and corporate functions.

We are looking for an experienced Government Relations professional to focus on engagement and advocacy with governments at the provincial, territorial and local level.

The successful candidate will play a critical role developing designing and executing engagements with these governments, as well engaging with the Canadian Bankers Association and other financial sector industry associations, as appropriate. industry associations.

Job Description

The successful candidate will:
  • Join a team of Government Relations professionals that provide holistic advice across a breadth of issues encountered by TD Bank Group in Canada.
  • Engage directly with TD business leaders that are impacted by policies at the provincial or local level, to align on strategy and potential outcomes.
  • Must be willing and able to register as a lobbyist, in compliance with lobbying rules in each jurisdiction.
  • Build and expand a network of contacts across Canada, across governments and political parties of all political stripes.
  • Proactively finding opportunities to work with governments and to promote the bank in communities across Canada, representing TD.
  • Act as the TD lead on advocacy discussions at industry associations on issues that fall within assigned responsibilities.
  • Track and update on issues that fall within assigned responsibilities, and contribute to broader reporting and updates provided by the TD Government Relations team.
  • Understand the role that public affairs can be used to influence, and understand when and how to deploy these tactics.
  • Provide strategic advice to senior executives and business leaders, and then effectively articulate TD’s position to government and other stakeholders.
  • Be a trusted advisor to colleagues in Corporate and Public Affairs, as required, when formulating responses to media requests or events that could generate reputational risk.

Requirements

Desired qualifications and skills:
  • 7+ years of experience in a role that involves advocacy and /or lobbying.
  • Experience working in the public sector in a political context, with personal knowledge and experience working at the intersection of the public service and political decision-making.
  • Excellent judgment and proven experience providing advice and counsel to senior leaders.
  • Intellectual curiosity and the desire to learn a breadth of subject matter and how they could impact TD.
  • Ability to communicate in English and French an asset.
  • Ability to write concisely and accurately on matters both political and technical.
  • Ability to drive an agenda and influence stakeholders to bring about the right outcomes.
  • Proven ability to navigate in a complex or ambiguous environment while managing multiple high-priority projects or deliverables.
  • Demonstrable experience finding opportunities to proactively advance complex issues as well as experience managing issues that pose reputational risk.
  • The role is posted as based in Toronto, but flexible to individuals based in other locations if the location is aligned to efficient execution of the duties outlined.
  • Financial sector experience an asset, but not required.
  • Experience at the provincial level of government level an asset, but not required.

This position requires proficiency in a language other than French to support customers, employees or markets located outside the province of Quebec or who require services in a language other than French.
