The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has a great opportunity for a Timber Production Forester in the Forest Service Branch, located in Prince Albert. Our Timber Production Forester supports the sustainable growth of Saskatchewan’s Forest sector across the province. As the Timber Production Forester, you will:

  • Lead and develop provincial policy and standards related to scaling and revenue under the Forest Products Scaling Code Chapter;
  • Review and approve sample scaling plans and amendments to ensure plans meet provincial scaling standards used to determine volume harvested for calculation of dues and fees;
  • Collaborate with industry to review issues and identify solutions that increase efficiencies while still meeting obligations and complying with the Forest Resources Management Act and Regulations;
  • Analyze data and anticipate trends that may impact the integrity of the sampling programs and provide direction to licensees and advice to other Branch policy makers;
  • Provide subject matter expertise on changes to the Forest Resources Management Act and Regulations related to scaling practices in the province;
  • Supervise, develop, and monitor performance of the scaling and revenue staff, and delegate work assignments/activities to meet unit, branch and ministry objectives and mandate;
  • Provide technical advice to other ministry staff to ensure compliance to operating procedures related to scaling, reporting and revenue collection; and
  • Lead the collaboration between the timber production program and the compliance/enforcement unit to incorporate scaling and revenue into the Branch Compliance Plan and Branch Compliance Report.

The Ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of the Forest Resources Management Act and Regulations as it relates to the scaling and reporting of wood volumes;
  • An understanding of the environmental code and provincial standard as it relates to scaling;
  • Experience in the development of policy in order to develop branch directives related to the volume control framework and scaling compliance planning and reporting processes;
  • Ability to identify solutions to complex problems and recommend strategies or make decisions to address issues and concerns within a context of available resources, stringent timelines, divergent perspectives and/or opposing viewpoints;
  • An understanding of the Canadian Standards Association standards related to the measurement of primary wood products, and other provincial jurisdiction scaling programs;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects by prioritizing work, multi-tasking, and adapting to changing priorities;
  • Ability to guide, develop, and coach a diverse group of employees, that results in a team that can meet its goals and objectives and build organizational capacity for the future, while maintaining a healthy, productive, respectful, and safe work environment that is free of discrimination;
  • Familiarity with the individuals representing the industry companies, licensees, forest product permit holders and licensed scalers; and
  • Ability to interact professionally, respectfully, and use appropriate judgement in order to determine or mediate a solution when encountering difficult or confrontational clients or situations.

Responsibilities of this position include operation of a 4-wheel drive pick-up truck and all-terrain vehicles in off road conditions, as well as fieldwork year-round and travel throughout Saskatchewan including remote locations.

Typically, the competencies required for this position can be achieved through a degree in forestry with significant experience in forest operations and scaling.


The successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the Association of Saskatchewan Forestry Professionals within 3 years of commencement.
