- Summer Intern - Child Protection Social Worker (Toronto, North West and Scarborough Branch)
- Resources for Children & Youth

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Scheduled to work onsite daily
- Support client contact and provide debrief with parents as required.
- The summer interns will receive training on contact logs and be responsible for taking detailed contact logs of their observations/interactions with families which will then be documented onto CPIN.
- The intern will communicate any immediate issues that require follow-up to the rest of the service team in a timely manner.
- Assist caseworkers in referring families to community services that will help the family meet their service goals.
- Job shadow various roles within the agency to increase knowledge and understanding of child welfare. This may include accompanying workers to visits/meetings with families, supports and collaterals.
- Participate in service team meetings for purposes of case trajectory development.
- Meet regularly with supervisor to engage in clinical discussions, case consultations and professional development.
- Attend trainings to learn more about child welfare and anti-oppressive/equity-based practice principles.
- Participate in ongoing program planning and service delivery based on branch and client need.
- Transport children to visits or appointments as required.
- Will be expected to work independently and demonstrate sound decision-making capabilities.
- Assist Intake , Family and Children’s Services Workers with other responsibilities as required.
- Acts in accordance with and incorporates Society's Code of Ethics, Confidentiality, Anti-Oppression/Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination policies, etc.
- Works in a safe manner in accordance with the Society’s health and safety policies and procedures and all relevant legislation.
- Performs other tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position is funded by Service Canada, and as per the funding requirements, all successful candidates need to meet all of the following criteria at the start of employment:
- Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
- A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
- Legally entitled to work according to Ontario legislation and regulations;
- Able to provide a vulnerable sector police check as per position requirement;
- Have Ontario G or G2 driver's license as per position requirement;
- Enrolled in or completed post-secondary education in Social Work.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Good organizational skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, email systems)
- Self-motivated, self-directed, energetic, resourceful, flexible, willingness to assist members of the team
- Strong problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work independently within a team setting and respectfully in a shared office space.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diversity of people and communities
- Ability to work in a manner that affirms the CAST’s Anti-oppression/Anti-Racism Policy
- Proficiency in a second language, an asset

- Families and children we work with come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds (racial, ethnic and cultural)
- Children and youth who have been physically, sexually, and/or emotionally abused or at risk of such abuse
- Children and youth who are neglected or at risk of neglect
- Children and youth who live in foster homes and group homes
- Youth who are learning to live independently e.g. building life skills, looking for or maintaining independent living arrangements and jobs
- Children and youth with special needs – developmental delays, physical disabilities.
