Job Summary
The Research Technician will perform molecular and cellular experiments as part of a research project as well as assist the Lab Manager and the Principal Investigator in the management of lab operations and finances. The individual will participate in interviews of new trainees, provide instruction and training, and oversee the progress of students’ projects. This position requires specialized knowledge and techniques in the field of epigenetics and epigenomics.

Organizational Status
The Research Technician will report to the Principal Investigator and interact regularly with members of the research group.

Work Performed
  • Designs and performs molecular and imaging experiments on cultured cells
  • Generates cell lines for experiments
  • Researches, coordinates and presents new technology to achieve research goals
  • Writes and streamlines experimental and safety protocols
  • Analyzes molecular and omics data, presents results, and prepares manuscripts
  • Helps maintain a clean and functional lab environment
  • Assists the Principal Investigator in budgeting
  • Assists the Principal Investigator in writing grants and ethics and biosafety applications
  • Oversees and trains new personnel in lab techniques and experimental planning and troubleshooting
  • Assists lab members in troubleshooting experiments
  • Assists in disposal of chemical wastes
  • Carries out any other related duties as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires considerable amount of judgement and responsibility. The Research Technician will report problems in a timely manner and work to correct the errors. Poor judgement and errors may result in repetition of experiments and thus a delay in research timeline and waste of resources.

Supervision Received
The Research Technician reports to the Principal Investigator and meets regularly to discuss progress and direction. The individual works under minimum supervision, and receives specific instructions on unusual problems or on matters that depart significantly from established policy and procedure. They will learn independently from interactions with colleagues or workshops.

Supervision Given
The Research Technician trains new lab personnel, provides assistance in troubleshooting and offers a different perspective on the research question.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to prepare data for publication and author manuscripts in the field of X-chromosome inactivation is required. Understanding of genetics and molecular biological techniques is required. Demonstrated laboratory abilities required, and previous experience with tissue culture, pyrosequencing and molecular biology preferred. Precision and manual dexterity required. Ability to use thermocyclers and quantitative PCR required.
