Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing mechanical engineering services and expertise to Capital projects and to operational requirements.
The position will be based out of our Calgary office. Some travel to Cuba is required.
Accountabilities
- Provide mechanical engineering services, support specialist engineering functions, and collaborate to provide engineering solutions that benefit the Energas operations.
- Provide engineering designs to projects that are aligned with the Plant Engineering business plan, following the applicable Plant Engineering standards and procedures.
- Validate the project scope by applying mechanical engineering principles to identify the problem to be solved by the project.
- Apply engineering design and problem solving principles to complete the mechanical engineering design on projects, ensuring schedule, quality, cost and objective are achieved.
- Contribute to the design of multi-disciplinary projects to assure fit-for-purpose construction, and with complete and accurate documentation.
- Develop and review mechanical documents such as engineering and construction work packages, piping/equipment specifications and drawings, vendor packages, DBM, WSEP.
- Independently manage small sustaining and maintenance projects.
- Ensure all project work is documented and reviewed.
- Contribute to the development, delivery and optimization of a Plant Engineering business plan which is aligned with the Asset Management Strategy.
- Utilize oversight, quality control and decisions making methodologies for the Plant Engineering projects when uncertainty exists.
- Complete work compliant to current regulatory requirements, and consistent with Sherritt’s objectives to deliver zero harm to employees, the environment and neighboring communities.
- Identify HSE hazards, risks, controls, and opportunities for improvement within projects and daily duties. Follow-up with mitigating actions where applicable.
- Identify improvements/issues with the existing standards, processes, and procedures with the intent to continuously improve and update documents as required.
- Deliver work in accordance with Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) as required by APEGA.
- Collaborate with operations and maintenance to develop effective project solutions that are aligned with the Energas business plan.
- Follow the Plant Engineering program to ensure that policies, standards, practices, and procedures are adhered to.
- Clearly document and effectively communicate to the required cross-functional teams, as per established procedures.
- Utilize new technologies to improve Plant Engineering services.
- Identify/investigate/recommend areas within the Energas facilities that can be improved with lean thinking and continuous improvement.
- Reply to engineering technical queries and MOC from Energas operations.
- Create material requisitions as required by Energas Operations.
- Create an AFE package: Bill of Materials, bid evaluations, manpower and material costs.
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering or related work in the industry.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology.
- Registered in Alberta as Professional Member or Member-in-Training (E.I.T, P.Eng., P.L (Eng)., P. Tech. (Eng), CET).
- Working knowledge of Maintenance, Engineering, and Reliability.
- Engineering policies, standards, practices, procedures and business processes.
- Safety certifications, i.e. confined space, work from heights, H2S, etc.
- Ability to work with engineering tools such as PV Elite, Caesar II, Autocad, MS Excel.
- Ability to read and create technical drawings and documents.
- Excellent written, verbal, communication and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Fluency in Spanish would be considered an asset.
