Your Opportunity:

Important Information: This is a day position working every other weekend with a static rotation. Hours of work are 0630-1445. Reporting to the Supervisor or Manager, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to collections and/or specimen processing, quality management, troubleshooting, and general support. Collects and processes a variety of specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, as appropriate to their scope of work. This may include but is not limited to: Performs blood collections on adult, pediatric and neonate patients. Handles, stores, transports and disposes of biological and other hazardous materials according to guidelines; records information as required. Verifies and enters patient and specimen information into the Laboratory Information System and/or log sheets. Performs limited testing procedures. Appropriately prioritizes the collection, processing and testing of specimens. Operates, maintains, and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment. Performs quality control and quality assurance activities, calibrates instruments and maintains records as appropriate to their scope of work. Recognizes and assesses unusual or abnormal findings. Escalates problems, issues, and occurrences as required and documents appropriately. Performs administrative duties such as filing, faxing, reports distribution, and archiving when required. Documents and participates in the training and orientation of students and staff. Monitors, orders, rotates, distributes and stores supplies as applicable.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Competency in phlebotomy. Inpatient phlebotomy experience in an organization of significant size, complexity, and diversity within the last year. Proficiency in data entry. LIS experience (Millennium and/or Epic) within the last year. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position. Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8 completed within the last six months. Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail. Ability to maintain strictest standards of patient privacy and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in neonatal skin puncture. Courses or certificates in personal leadership development. Courses or training in process improvement or change management. Demonstrates initiative, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Experience interpreting workflow visuals and ability to respond appropriately to meet turnaround times. Ability to lead self through change. National certification with CSMLS. WHMIS 2015 certification. Intermediate competency in Microsoft Office.
