Job Description

You love maps! You care about data! What’s more, you love creating and maintaining Geographical Information Systems (GIS) that provide visual tools for the display and analysis of geospatial data. In this role, you contribute to “Taking Care of Banff” by supporting the integrity of the Town’s corporate GIS data and various drawings, maps and apps developed to assist internal and external stakeholders in visualization of data, space and structure.

Your previous experience has prepared you to help develop and maintain a variety of mapping products, such as wall maps, map books, graphics and interactive applications. You are familiar with spatial data creation, having used multiple sources, including tabular, GPS and digitization and you are confident with GIS data analysis, file management, database management, spatial data capture, structuring and integration into GIS themes.

You will report to the GIS Coordinator and are diligent and committed to data integrity, quality and accuracy. Your enthusiasm for GIS and information sharing makes you a natural teacher who can “translate” GIS into layman’s language for users inside and outside the organization.

You will be required to perform analysis and quality control of geospatial data, while supporting a number of concurrent projects. These responsibilities fit well with your reputation for attention to detail and your ability to quickly understand and interpret stakeholder needs and implement appropriate solutions.

You might be enrolled in a post-secondary degree or diploma program in GIS or perhaps have recently completed your program and are eager to gain more hands-on experience that will transition you into a career in the GIS field. You are exceptional with the use of ESRI GIS software suite of products, particularly ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcPro and ArcGIS Online, and are naturally proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel). JavaScript, FME, HTML or Python programming experience would be considered an asset, as would previous experience in a cartographic production environment.

You are committed to a role in the GIS field, and we can consider flexible scheduling that aligns with on-going development or post-secondary programs. If your experience, skills and natural talents align with the requirements described, we look forward to receiving your application and to providing you with an opportunity to join the GIS profession in our inspiring mountain home.

“Taking care of Banff: our People, our Community, our Park.”

For your safety and the safety of others, you will be required to demonstrate (in writing from an authorized Health Services site) that you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 vaccination as of your hire date.

Working safely is a condition of employment at the Town of Banff. As part of our internal responsibility system, all employees are accountable for adhering to Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Town of Banff safety protocols. The Town of Banff’s safety culture philosophy is one of continuous improvement, so we look forward to your suggestions to make our workplace even safer.
