Position Summary

The Food Bank Coordinator at TNDF will work closely with the TNDF team and community at large to provide nutritious, diverse, and safe food to community members through our choice-based food bank.

Working under the supervision of the Food Access Manager, they will ensure that the food bank builds household and community food security in innovative ways.

The Food Bank Coordinator will collaborate closely with Social Services team members and community partners to help address the underlying causes of food insecurity by building relationships and providing warm referrals. The Food Bank Coordinator may support individuals experiencing occasional need, chronic food insecurity, or in active crisis.

Hours and Location

This is a full time, permanent position (37.5 hrs/week). Standard office hours are Monday – Friday from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, however evening and/or weekend shifts will be required for this role, with advance notice given. There is no remote work or hybrid work option available for this position.

This position is based out of our food bank at 38 Cameron St, Cannington ON.

Essential Duties Include (but are not limited to):

Food Bank Operations

- Manage food procurement through purchasing, donations, and in-house processing, while adhering to a budget. Optimize the budget by seeking out new vendor partnerships when possible.
- Maintain a dignified experience for food bank clients by ensuring the space is clean and safe, managing inventory for food safety, and creating a welcoming, non-judgmental environment.
- Manage and minimize food waste in collaboration with other TNDF Food Access programs.
- Support food bank clients through intake, booking and facilitating appointments, and nurturing an ongoing supportive relationship.
- Record and report on food bank-related data including client profiles and visits through Link2Feed, gift card tracking, expense tracking in MS Excel, etc.
- In collaboration with the Food Access Manager, identify opportunities to improve food bank operations.
- In collaboration with the Food Access Manager, maintain and update the Nourish House Food Bank Manual as needed.

Client and Community Engagement

- Provide clients with thoughtful and informative referrals to other TNDF programs from which they may benefit (i.e., Mobile Food Market, Social Services, Community Kitchen, Education, etc.)
- Collaborate with the creative media team to effectively brand and promote food bank programs, partnerships, events, and other initiatives.
- Administer surveys to food bank clients at least once per year.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with existing and prospective community partners for TNDF, including businesses, non-profits, clubs/groups, and individuals.
- Act as the primary point of contact for Feed the Need in Durham, engaging with their team regularly.

Supervision

- Train and supervise the Food Access Assistants, volunteers, placements students, and other individuals supporting food bank operations.
- Delegate food bank tasks to supporting staff and volunteers.
- Under the leadership of the Food Access Manager, contribute to reviews and performance improvement plans for those individuals for which training and oversight is provided.

General Duties

- Whenever possible, conduct research and participate in trainings to build knowledge and skills to continually improve and innovate TNDF programs.
- In collaboration with all other TNDF departments, provide feedback on the development of internal policies and processes
- Actively participate in staff meetings, team trainings, and TNDF community events (i.e., Night Market, fundraisers, etc.).
- Offer support to and communicate often with other staff members.
- Perform other related errands and duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience

- Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in social work or a related field (DSW, Addictions and Mental Health, etc.) is an asset, or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience working at a supervisory/coordinator level.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and supporting individuals through crisis situations (e.g., suicidal ideation, intimate partner violence, etc.) is an asset.
- Experience delivering programming in a rural setting is an asset, particularly associated with food insecurity and food systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with people of different ages, genders, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and individuals who have experienced marginalization.
- A Food Handler Certificate is an asset (we provide this training if you do not have one).
- Familiarity with Link2Feed software and MS Office Suite is an asset.
- An ability to do heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) and withstand repetitive movements.
- A familiarity with Brock Township, Durham Region, and/or rural communities is an asset
- A valid driver’s license and regular access to a reliable vehicle.
