Reporting to the Professional Practice Leader, Clinical Nutrition, the Dietitian II, Acute Care utilizes relevant experience and advanced skills to design, implement, evaluate and document the appropriate nutritional care plan including those patients requiring specialized nutrition support. Participates in the development of clinical nutrition practice guidelines and procedures, and acts as a resource person for complex nutritional care and specialized nutrition support, and supports dietetic practice education in accordance with professional standards and program objectives. Participates in practice-based research and knowledge translation projects in collaboration with the health care team.

Qualifications / Skills and Education: Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition or Dietetics from a recognized University. Dietetic practice education from an accredited program meeting the Integrated Competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice (ICDEP). Maintains certification as a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) from the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN). Two (2) years recent, related experience in an active acute care setting, including one (1) year working with patients requiring parenteral/enteral nutrition support in a variety of care areas such as, gastro-intestinal surgery or failure and critical care, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current registration in the College of Dietitians of British Columbia (BC) with Restricted Activities A and B.

Duties and Responsibilities: Evaluates nutritional status/risk of patients and designs, implements, evaluates, and documents appropriate nutrition care plans for patients those requiring advanced nutritional care including those requiring enteral/parenteral support; liaises with food service staff regarding patient food services related concerns.

Counsels and/or educates patients and family members on nutrition issues as needed.

Contributes to an inter-disciplinary approach to patient care and program related issues by attending ward rounds and team conferences to review and provide specialized nutritional care and follow-up for patients.

Determines, refers and/or liaises with community based nutrition resources as required to ensure that patient/resident care issues are addressed

Acts as a resource person to dietitians and other health care professionals on specialized nutrition support and nutrition throughout Providence Health Care, by providing support for handling complex cases.

Identifies and organizes continuing education needs for dietitians and other health care professionals within PHC by reviewing professional literature, consulting with and providing advice for other health professionals, initiating, developing and presenting relevant guidelines for Clinical Nutrition Services and relevant clinical programs.

Participates in quality improvement activities by initiating, planning, developing, implementing and evaluating written procedures, standards, assessment forms and patient materials, program descriptions, audit tools, and clinical guidelines for Clinical Nutrition Services and relevant clinical programs.

Supports clinical research activities by identifying areas of research, assessing current research relevant to nutrition, generating questions and participating in writing proposals, collecting and interpreting data, and disseminating information stemming from the research findings within departmental resources.

Identifies nutrition related patient educational needs; initiates, prepares and presents educational programs and materials in collaboration with departmental and other team members.

Assists with dietetic practice education by identifying learning objectives and enabling activities, and providing clinical education and supervision to dietetics students.

Completes required patient documentation, forms and reports and documents workload statistics.

Monitors and controls levels of supplies and equipment. Reports equipment malfunctions and arranges for equipment maintenance.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
