What you’ll be doing

Later is hiring for a Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join our growing team! Reporting to the Controller, and working closely with the Finance and People & Places team, you will manage payroll and benefits administration for our 150+ employees. We are in a scale-up phase so we are looking for someone who enjoys a fast-paced and agile environment and has scaled payroll and benefits administration processes.

  • Input, administer, and process the semi-monthly payroll for 150+ Canadian employees accurately and on a timely basis
  • Review, administer and process semi-monthly payroll for 100+ US employees
  • Responsible for keeping the payroll systems current by processing terminations/resignations, new hires, allowances, bonuses, remuneration changes, unpaid leaves, parental leave top-ups, expenses etc., as well as processing payroll reconciliations, ROEs, short-term disability claims & benefits deductions
  • Help create and contribute to current payroll workflows
  • Responsible for the completion of standard year end payroll tasks (e.g. reconcile and distribute T4s, T2200s, W2s etc.)
  • Ensure that payroll is in compliant with ESA regulations of the relevant province and internal policies
  • Prepare monthly and ad-hoc reports for the Senior Accountant, FP&A team and Controller
  • Reconcile each pay period and provide supporting documentation
  • Prepare the required quarterly and annual filings, including but not limited to WorkSafe BC and Employer Health Tax
  • Responding to inquiries from employees, government agencies, and/or other third parties
  • Maintaining detailed records and documentation of all payroll functions and processes
  • Liaise with our EOR and UK Subsidiary representatives to ensure new hires and payroll changes are processed on a timely basis and in compliance with local requirements
  • Administer Canadian group benefits programs (RBC Group Benefits and HSA Wellness Spending Account) by adding new enrolments, removing past employees, updating salary and coverage modifications, and processing monthly billings
  • Ad hoc duties as required

  • 5+ years of full cycle payroll experience
  • Must have experience processing payroll for 150+ employees in multiple provinces across Canada
  • Professional written and verbal communication with high confidentiality and discretion
  • An understanding of payroll regulatory requirements and Employment Standards Acts
  • Ability to exercise good judgment & show initiative
  • A strong understanding of taxable benefits
  • Ability to analyze and review data for errors and be able to work independently
  • Intermediate Google Suite (Sheets, Docs) skills
  • An open-mind about payroll optimization as well as development of payroll efficiencies
  • Experience with time-driven deadlines; and an eye for extreme attention to detail and accuracy
  • Experience working with US & International payroll, including knowledge of Deel platform is preferred
  • Experience working with WagePoint and ADPRun considered an asset
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification (preferred)
  • Experience with payroll service provider transition is an asset
